SCR-62 (140-0709) Operation Faxback Doc. # 15037

WARNING: To protect your hearing, set VOLUME to its lowest setting before
you turn on the radio or play a cassette tape.

PLAYING THE RADIO

1. Set FUNCTION to RADIO.

2. Set BAND to FM, FM STEREO (for FM Stereo), or AM and rotate the
turning knob to tune to your desired station.

3. Adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level.

4. Set E-BASS to IN to enhance the bass effect or to OUT for normal bass
    effect.

5. To turn off the radio, set FUNCTION to TAPE/RADIO OFF or HI SPEED
    DUBBING.

NOTES: The SCR-62's AM/FM radio has two antennas. The AM antenna is
built-in. For the best FM reception, fully extend and adjust the
        telescoping antenna.

If you choose FM STEREO and the station is received in stereo,
the FM STEREO indicator lights steadily.

To improve the reception of a weak FM station, set BAND to FM.
The signal changes from stereo to monaural.

PLAYING A CASSETTE TAPE

1. Press STOP/EJECT on either Tape A or Tape B to open the cassette
    compartment door.

2. Use your finger or a pencil to turn the cassette's hub and take up
    any slack.

NOTE: Avoid touching the tape. Fingerprints attract dust and dirt.

3. Load the cassette tape with its open edge facing up and the desired
    tape side facing you.

To hear the entire tape, be sure the tape's full reel is on the right.
If necessary, press REWIND to rewind the tape.

4. Gently close the compartment.

5. Set FUNCTION to TAPE/RADIO OFF.

6. Press PLAY.

7. Adjust VOLUME to a comfortable listening level.

8. Set E-BASS to IN to enhance the bass effect or to OUT for normal bass
    sound.

9. To stop the tape, press STOP/EJECT once. Press STOP/EJECT again to
open the cassette compartment, then remove the cassette tape.

NOTES: The deck automatically stops when the tape reaches the end.

To play a tape's other side, remove it, turn it over, and insert
        it again.

Press PAUSE to temporarily stop tape play. Press PAUSE again to
        resume play.

Using Rewind and Fast-Forward

Press REWIND or FAST-F to quickly move the tape to an earlier or later
selection. Press STOP/EJECT, then PLAY to resume play.

When the deck finishes rewinding or fast-forwarding the tape, it
automatically stops.

Using Consecutive Playback

Follow these steps to play one side of a cassette in Tape B immediately
after playing one side of a cassette in Tape A.

1. Load a cassette you want to play first in Tape A and the one you want
to play second in Tape B.

2. Press PLAY on Tape A.

3. On Tape B, press PAUSE, then PLAY. This cassette begins when the
    cassette in Tape A ends.

4. To stop consecutive play before the tape player automatically stops,
press STOP/EJECT on both Tape A and B.

RECORDING AND DUBBING

You can record from the radio, use the built-in microphone to make a live
recording, or dub (copy) a cassette tape.

NOTES: Tape quality greatly affects the quality of the recording. We
recommend Supertape Extended-Range or Low Noise Type 1 tape.

The SCR-62's Automatic Level Control (ALC) automatically adjusts
the recording level. The VOLUME and E-BASS controls have no
        effect on recording.

Making A Recording

1. Set FUNCTION to RADIO to record from the radio, or to TAPE/RADIO
OFF to record from external source.

2. Load a blank cassette tape or one you want to record on into Tape B.

3. Tune the radio to the station you want to record, or place the SCR-62
two or three feet from the live recording source.

4. Press RECORD to begin recording. Both PLAY and RECORD lock down.

5. Press STOP/EJECT on Tape B to stop recording.

NOTE: The deck automatically stops when the tape reaches the end.

Recording AM Broadcast

Sometimes, taped AM broadcasts produce a whistling sound that you can hear
while recording or playing the tape. To reduce or eliminate this sound,
set BEAT CUT on the back of the recorder to the position that gives you
the best quality recording.

Dubbing (Copying) a Cassette Tape

Follow these steps to dub one side of a cassette tape. To copy the tape's
other side, turn over the tapes in both cassette compartments and repeat
the steps.

1. Set FUNCTION to TAPE/RADIO OFF (to record at normal speed) or HI
SPEED DUBBING (to record at twice the normal speed).

2. Load the tape you want to dub into Tape A.

3. Load a blank cassette tape or one you want to record over into the
    Tape B.

4. Press PAUSE on Tape B.

5. Press RECORD on Tape B. RECORD and PLAY lock down.

6. Press PLAY on Tape A to begin copying. PAUSE releases on Tape B.

Note: You can listen to the tape playing in Tape A as you copy it. The
volume setting does not affect the recording level.

7. Each deck automatically stops when its tape reaches the end.

To stop copying before the tape ends, press STOP/EJECT on Tape B. The
tape in Tape A continues playing. Press STOP/EJECT on Tape A to stop
that tape.

USING HEADPHONES

To connect a pair of headphones (not supplied), plug the headphones' 1/8-
inch plug into the PHONES jack. Your local Radio Shack store sells a wide
selection of stereo headphones.

Listening Safely

Follow these guidelines to protect your hearing when you use headphones.

Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. After
you begin listening, adjust the volume to a comfortable listening
    level.

Do not listen at extremely high volume levels. Extended high volume
listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.

Once you set the volume, do not increase it. Over time, your ears
adapt to the volume level, so a volume level that does not cause
discomfort might still damage your hearing.

Traffic Safety

Do not wear headphones while operating a motor vehicle or riding a
bicycle. This can cause a traffic hazard and is illegal in some areas.

Even though some headphones are designed to let you hear some outside
sounds when listening at normal volume levels, they still present a
traffic hazard.
