LP 5 (260-1165) Power-Up Faxback Doc. # 5671
The power-up sequence varies slightly depending upon the computer system
used. With Model I systems, all peripherals (printers included) should be
turned on before applying power to the Computer. For Model III systems,
the Printer must be turned on AFTER the Computer, but BEFORE inserting the
system diskette. Following the recommended procedure for Model II systems,
when the "INSERT DISKETTE" message appears, turn on the Printer and other
peripherals - then insert system diskette.
Power lamp will remain lit while Printer is on. It is essential the
Printer remain on while connected to the Computer. An inactive Printer
can cause erratic operation of the system. Remember, also, that if the
power is removed or applied to the Printer while the Computer is running a
program, voltage spikes could cause program malfunction and/or loss of
memory.
HEAD CLEANING
The print head assembly contains seven cemented carbide print wires that
are led through wire guides to the head front surface. These print wires
are arrange in a vertical row by the ruby guide at the head tip. Their
back ends are connected to the printer solenoids. By energizing the
solenoids, the print wires are pushed toward the head tip to make the
print.
If the print head becomes extremely dirty, use the following procedure to
remove, clean, and replace it:
TOOLS REQUIRED: Phillips Screwdriver, Diagonal Cutting Pliers, Feeler
Gauge.
1. Cut the cable band fastening the print head signal cable to the carrier
frame.
2. Remove the print head PC board by loosening the two M3 screws at the
lower left of the carrier frame.
3. Pull out the connector mounted on the print head and remove the print
head from the carrier frame.
NOTE:
1. When removing and replacing the print head, be careful not to subject
the print head solenoid to shock.
2. When replacing the print head, reverse the order of steps 1 through 4.
CLEANING
1. When the ribbon or paper chips are stuck to the print head, remove the
chips by using a needle like rod, and then immerse the print head tip
into alcohol or freon solution and wash the tip clean.
2. When the supply of grease is running low, supplement it to the solenoid
spring with an extreme-pressure type grease (FLOIL G488 or equivalent).
If a big depression or wear is found, remove and replace the armature.
3. The period or maintenance is fixed as follows:
Number of printed forms: 300 sheets per day
Number or printed characters: 250 characters per sheet
Rate of operation: 20 days per month
Under the conditions listed above, maintenance must be performed either
every six months or after 30 million characters, whichever comes first.
ADJUSTMENT
1. Gap Between Print Head and Platen
a) Turn the lock lever toward the platen and turn the penetration control
lever all the way to the left.
b) Mount the print head with the two M5 screws tightened lightly. Insert
a 0.01 inch (0.25mm) feeler gauge between the head end surface and the
platen printing surface. Securely tighten the M5 screws.
c) Adjust the gap to conform with the paper thickness by turning the
penetration control lever to the proper position and then turning the
lock lever away from the platen to fix the head position.
