HOW TO ALIGN THE PRINT CARTRIDGE

Align the print cartridge after installing a new print cartridge. To align
the print cartridge:

1 From the printer's Control Program, click the Cartridges tab.

2 Click the Align Cartridges button. The Ink Cartridge Alignment
dialog box appears on your screen. Each pattern has a number under
        it.

3 Locate the number under the alignment pattern that comes closest
to forming a perfectly straight line.

4 In the dialog box, enter the number you chose as the appropriate
        alignment setting.

  5 Click OK.

HOW TO CLEAN THE PRINT CARTRIDGE CARRIER CONTACTS

Clean the print cartridge carrier contacts only if you have already
cleaned the print nozzles and wiped the print nozzles but print quality is
still not satisfactory. To clean the print cartridge carrier contacts:

1 From the printer's Control Program, click the Cartridges tab.

2 In the Cartridge list box, click the down arrow and choose Color
        or Black.

3 In the Action list box, click the down arrow and choose Reinstall
        Old.

4 Click the Action button (now captioned "Reinstall type Cartridge"
where type is either Color or Black) to move the carrier to the
        load position.

5 Unplug the printer power cord. This forces the print cartridge
carrier to remain in the load position.

6 Remove the print cartridge. For more information see "How to
        remove a print cartridge" below.

7 Use a clean, dry cloth to clean the cartridge carrier contacts
        inside the printer.

  8 Replace the print cartridge.

9 Plug the printer power cord into an electrical outlet.

10 Click Continue to return the cartridge carrier to the far right
position and close the dialog box.

11 Test the print cartridge by choosing the Clean Print Nozzles
        button on the Cartridges tab.

12 Click OK to close the Control Program.

If the print quality has not improved after this cleaning process, replace
your print cartridge. If print quality still does not improve, your
printer may require service.

HOW TO CLEAN THE PRINT NOZZLES

Run the print cartridge nozzle test to clean the print nozzles. A test
line prints so you can see if the cleaning process was successful. Use the
nozzle test:

When you suspect the nozzles are clogged
When characters are not printing completely.

TO RUN THE NOZZLE TEST:

1 Make sure there is paper in the automatic feeder.

2 From the printer's Control Program, click the Cartridges tab.

3 Click the Clean Print Nozzles button.

  4 Examine the test pattern.

5 Compare the diagonal line above the printed bars to the diagonal
line below the printed bars. Look for a break in the diagonal
lines. A broken line indicates clogged nozzles. If the bottom line
has fewer breaks, or better print quality than the top line, run
the test two more times. If the print quality is satisfactory
after running the test three times, the print nozzles are clean.
You do not need to complete the remaining steps. If the print
quality of both lines is not satisfactory after running the test
three times, go to step 6.

6 Remove and reinstall the print cartridge.

  7 Repeat the nozzle test.

8 If the lines are still broken, wipe the print cartridge nozzles.
For instructions, see "How to wipe the print nozzles" below.

HOW TO CONSERVE INK IN THE PRINT CARTRIDGE

1 From the printer's Control Program, click the DOS Printing tab.

2 Click the appropriate Ink Saver option.

        * Choose Off to turn off Ink Saver.

        * Choose Medium to reduce the amount of ink used by approximately
          25%.

        * Choose High to reduce the amount of ink used by approximately
50%. This setting keeps the ink from soaking the page, and
reduces the time required for the ink to dry.

Note: This only affects DOS print jobs.

How to dispose of used print cartridges

  * Do not shake used print cartridges. The remaining ink can leak.

  * Before discarding the used print cartridge, put it in a leak-proof
    bag.

How to install or change print cartridges

Important: Perform the entire print cartridge replacement procedure
           without interruption.

           screen.

7 At the printer, pull the handle of the print cartridge you are
replacing toward you until you hear a click.

8 Remove the print cartridge by lifting it straight out of the
        printer.

HOW TO INSTALL OR CHANGE A PRINT CARTRIDGE

1 If you are installing a new print cartridge, remove it from its
packaging. Carefully remove the sticker and transparent tape
covering the copper printhead from the cartridge.

** Important: Do not touch the copper contact area!

2 Insert the replacement print cartridge in the print cartridge
        carrier.

3 Push back firmly on the cartridge until it snaps securely into
        place.

If the print cartridge moves loosely in the carrier, it is not
locked into place. Repeat this step

4 If you installed an old print cartridge, skip to step 6.
If you installed a new print cartridge, align the print cartridge.
For instructions, see "How to align the print cartridge" above.

5 Click Continue to close the dialog box, then click OK to close the
        Control Program.

HOW TO MAINTAIN PRINT CARTRIDGES

Follow these print cartridge maintenance tips to ensure the longest life
from your print cartridge and optimum performance from your printer.

1 Keep a print cartridge in its packaging until you are ready to
install it. Cartridges exposed for extended periods may dry out or
        clog.

2 Remove a print cartridge from the printer only to replace or clean
        it.

3 Replace or reinstall the print cartridge immediately, or return
        it to its packaging.

4 Do not leave the cartridge exposed for an extended period.

5 Avoid refilling print cartridges. Refilling empty print cartridges
invalidates your warranty. Incompatible inks can cause damage to
the printhead or to the printer.

6 Store the print cartridge in the same environment as the printer.
You can store one cartridge in the holder on the back of your
        printer.

HOW TO MONITOR INK LEVELS

From the printer's Control Program, click the Status tab or the Cartridges
tab. The ink cartridge images show the amount of ink remaining in each
cartridge. If you are running Microsoft Windows 95, you may also access
this information from the Compaq IJx00 printer icon in the system tray
area of the taskbar at the bottom of your screen. You may either:

1 Place the mouse arrow over the icon to display an ink level
        summary.
2 Click the icon to display an information dialog box.

HOW TO USE THE SMART INK FEATURE

The Smart Ink feature is designed to monitor the level of ink in your
cartridges and warn you before they need to be replaced.

1 Open the printer's Control Program.

  2 Click the Cartridges tab.

3 From the Smart Ink area, choose whether you want the printer
software to warn you in either days or pages remaining.

4 Click the up and down arrows to choose to be warned in a specific
number of days (or pages) remaining.

When your cartridge's ink level falls within the defined threshold, the
Ink Low Warning dialog box displays. From this dialog box you can choose
to display or print a complete product list, or if an Internet browser is
registered to your computer and you have an account with an Internet
Service Provider, you may choose to order a new cartridge online.

If you have a cartridge that is low on ink, the Ink Low Warning dialog box
will display each time you send a job to print, unless you choose Don't
Warn Me Again or replace the print cartridge. Installing a new print
cartridge will reset the ink level monitor and cartridge life predictions.

HOW TO WIPE THE PRINT NOZZLES

Wipe the print nozzles only if you have already cleaned the print nozzles
but the print quality is still not satisfactory. To clean the print
nozzles, see "How to clean the print nozzles" above. Wiping the print
nozzles removes dried ink from the nozzles. To wipe the print nozzles:

1 Remove the print cartridge from the printer. For instructions see
How to remove a print cartridge.

2 Use a clean cloth, dampened with water only, to gently clean the
entire copper colored area, including the nozzles and contacts.
When cleaning the color print cartridge, wipe the nozzles in one
direction so the colors do not mix. To dissolve dried ink, hold
the damp cloth against the nozzles for about three seconds. Gently
        blot and wipe dry.

3 Allow the copper-colored area to dry.

4 Reinstall the print cartridge and repeat the nozzle test.

5 If the nozzle test line is still broken, clean the print cartridge
carrier contacts. For instructions, see "How to clean the print
        cartridge carrier contacts" above.
