Lexmark 5000 Color Inkjet Printer

Follow these steps to set up your Lexmark 5000 Color Inkjet Printer.
Attach the paper support.
1. Turn the printer so the back faces you.
2. Slide the bottom of the paper support down through the guides on the
back of the automatic feeder.
Attach the printer cable.
1. Connect the parallel cable to the printer.
(Use a parallel cable that supports bidirectional communication (IEEE
1284-compatible).
2. Fasten the metal clips on the printer to the parallel cable.
3. Connect the other end of the parallel cable to the back of your
computer. Tighten the screws on the parallel cable to the computer.
4. Check the parallel cable connections to make sure they are completely
connected.
Plug in your printer
1. Connect the power supply to the printer.
2. Plug the power supply into an electric outlet.
You will hear some movement inside the printer when you first plug it
in. The Paper Status light turns on and off briefly, and the printer
enters a power-saver mode until you send a print job.
Your printer does not have a power button. It has a Paper Satus
light and a Paper Feed button on the left side of the printer. The
Paper Feed button is the large-looking button.

Paper Feed button
Use the Paper Feed button to feed paper into the printer when you run out
of paper.
NOTE: You do not need to press the Paper Feed button in order to get the
printer to load the paper under normal conditions.
Load paper
The automatic feeder can hold approximately 100 sheets of plain paper.
To load paper:
1. Place paper against the right side of the automatic feeder.
2. Squeeze the release tab and the left paper guide together, and slide
the left paper guide to the edge of the paper.
Install the printer software
Windows 95
1. Start Windows.
2. Insert Lexmark 5000 Series Color Jetprinter Setup Disk 1 into your
disk drive.
3. From the Start menu, choose Settings, then choose Printers.
4. From the Printers folder, double-click Add Printer.
5. Click Next until you are prompted by a screen listing printers
manufacturers and models.
6. Click Have Disk.
7. In the "Install From Drive" dialog box, type the letter of your disk
drive (for example, a:), and then click OK.
8. Click Next.
9. Select the port you want to use with this printer (for example, LPT1)
and then click OK.
10. If you have other printers installed, click Yes to use the lexmark
5000 Series as the default Windows printer.
11. Click Finish.
12. When prompted by the printer software, insert Setup Disk 2 into your
disk drive and click OK.
13. When the Software License Agreement appears, read it and click Yes to
continue installing the printer software.
14. When the Install New Cartridges dialog box appears, continue with
"Install the print cartridges."
Windows 3.1 or 3.11
1. Start Windows.
2. Insert Lexmark 5000 Series Color Jetprinter Setup Disk 1 into your
disk drive.
3. From the Windows Program Manager menu bar, choose File, then choose
Run.
4. In the command-line text box, type the letter of your disk drive,
followed by setup (for example, a:setup), and then click OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
6. When prompted by the printer software, insert Setup Disk 2 into your
disk drive and click OK.
7. When the Install New Cartridges dialog box appears, continue with
"Install the print cartridges."
Windows NT 4.0
1. Start Windows.
2. Insert Lexmark 5000 Series Color Setup Disk 1 for Windows NT 4.0 into
your disk drive.
3. From the Start menu, choose Run.
4. In the command-line text box, type the letter of your disk drive,
followed by setup (for example, a:setup), and then click OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen.
6. When prompted by the printer software, insert Setup Disk 2 into your
disk drive and click OK.
7. When the Install New Cartridges dialog box appears, continue with
"Install the print cartridges."
Install the print cartridges
When the Install New Cartridge Set dialog box appears during printer
software installation, the cartridge carrier moves to the left side of the
printer. Do not pull the carrier by hand.
To install the print cartridges:
1. Raise the printer front cover.
2. From the Install New Cartridge Set dialog box, select which cartridge
set you are installing (Black/Color or Photo/Color).
3. Remove the sticker and the transparent tape covering the copper area
on the cartridge. Do not touch the copper contact area!
4. Insert a cartridge.

5. Push back on the cartridge until it snaps securely into place.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the second cartridge.
7. Close the printer front cover.
8. In the Install New Cartridges dialog box, click New Cartridges
Installed.
Align the print cartridges
When you click New Cartridges Installed, the Align Cartridges dialog box
appears on your screen. The printer prints a test page of alignment
patterns. Each pattern has a number below it.
1. From each alignment group on the test page, locate the number under
the alignment pattern that comes closest to forming a perfectly
straight line.
2. In the Align Cartridges dialog box, enter the numbers from the print
test page as the appropriate alignment settings.
3. After you have entered a number for all four patterns, click OK.
4. Before you restat Windows, remove the setup diskette.
