DigiTraveler™ GPS Receiver (200-1602) Tutorial: Acquiring a Satellite Signal

This tutorial will show you how to use the DeLorme Street Atlas software that comes with the 200-1602, DigiTraveler™, to acquire satellite signals on a laptop computer.

Step 1: Initializing the receiver's signal.
Start up the DeLorme Street Atlas USA software. Click on the GPS tab near the bottom of the screen.
Step 2: Selecting the correct GPS receiver
Click on the "Settings" button then the "Device" button and make sure that the "RadioShack DigiTraveler" is the selected device
Step 3:Setting the Com Port and Communication Settings
Click on the Port arrow and set Com Port to Com 1. Click in Settings box and type 4800,8,N,1.
Step 4:Initializing the receiver
Click on the "Done" button, then click on the "Start GPS" button
Step 5: Checking to see if the receiver is acquiring satellite signals
A flashing red circle should be seen. This indicates that the receiver is acquiring satellite signals.
Step 6: What to do if you get a COM port error message

If you see the above error message, "Can't open specified COM port", you will need to choose another COM port. Close this window by clicking OK. Another message window will pop up, "Save GPS Log File As", click the "Cancel" button on this window.
Step 7: Choosing another COM port
Click on the "Device" button and choose another COM port. Click the "Done" button.
Step 8: Checking again to see if the receiver is acquiring satellite signals

Click on the "Start GPS" button and now you should see the flashing red circle, indicating that the receiver is acquiring satellite signals. If you do not see this red circle, repeat steps 6 through 8.
