This tutorial will show you how to connect the RadioShack DigiTraveler to a laptop, and install the necessary software, in order to begin using your personal GPS navigation system.

For additional information on this product, see the links below:

Step 1. Installing the DeLorme Software

Using the DeLorme "Street Atlas USA" installation CD, "Program Data", follow the directions to install the DeLorme software onto your laptop.

Step 2: Connecting the DigiTraveler™ receiver to a power source

The DigiTraveler receiver can be powered using 3 "AAA" alkaline batteries, or a 6V DC (CLA) car cigarette lighter adapter (RadioShack cat. # 273-1811) with a size "B" adaptaplug (RadioShack cat. # 273-1705) attached. To install the batteries, slide off the battery cover and place the batteries into the compartment matching up the "+" and "-" symbols. All three batteries are placed in the same direction. To use the CLA, plug the cigarette lighter adapter into the 6V DC jack at the back of the receiver. Plug the other end into a power source.

Step 3: Connecting a USB to serial cable to the DigiTraveler™ receiver cable

To connect the receiver to a laptop, a USB to serial cable (RadioShack cat. # 260-0183) is needed. Connect the receiver cable to the USB to serial cable.

Step 4: Installing the USB to serial cable software

Using the disk that came with the USB to serial cable (260-0183), install the software on to your laptop. A message may appear at the end of the software installation, asking you if you want to restart Windows now, or restart later. Choose the "Restart Windows now" option.

Step 5: Connecting the DigiTraveler™ receiver to the receiver cable

Plug the receiver connection cable into the receiver's cable port on the back of the receiver.

Step 6: Connecting the USB to serial cable to the laptop

Plug the USB to serial cable into one of the laptop's USB ports.

Step 7: Checking the DigiTraveler™ receiver

The green light on the top of the DigiTraveler receiver should now be lit. If it is not, check to make sure that all the cables are connected properly, the power source is working. You may need to connect the USB to serial cable to another USB port on the laptop.
