Question: Why does my computer think my DigiTraveler™ is a mouse?
Answer: If you have a laptop with only a USB port and are using a 260-183 (6 Ft. (1.8m) USB-to-Serial Port Printer Cable Adapter), the software will configure the cable as COM 6. What you will see is the cursor on your computer screen jumping around erratically. This is because your computer is recognizing the USB adapter (260-183) as a mouse. You will need to start the laptop before connecting the cable. If two connected devices are set to the same Com Port, there will be a conflict. One of the devices will need to be re-configured to another Com Port.

Question: How long does the DigiTraveler™ take to track satellites?
Answer: Much of this depends on where you have the DigiTraveler™ receiver situated. In a good position, from a cold start it may take approximately 20 minutes and from a warm start it could take about 15 seconds. A cold start is when the DigiTraveler™ is being used for the first time or it has not been in use for sometime. A warm start is when the DigiTraveler™ is being used fairly soon after the last use.

Question: How many satellites does the DigiTraveler™ need to acquire in order to calculate my position?
Answer: Three satellites are needed to determine latitude and longitude (2-D) and a fourth is required to determine altitude (3-D). The DigiTraveler™ measures the time it takes for signals sent from the different satellites to reach it and from this data your exact position is triangulated.

Question: What factors can affect the performance of my DigiTraveler™?
Answer: A number of different things can affect how your DigiTraveler™ performs. The weather is not a big factor, but if it is exceptionally cloudy the satellite signal can be blocked. The signal can also be blocked if you are in a built-up area where there are tall buildings, in the mountains or where there is heavy foliage. The fewer satellite signals that reach your DigiTraveler™, the less accurate your pinpointed position will be.

Question: After installing the software and fresh batteries etc., all I get is "acquiring". What should I do?
Answer: First of all you should make sure that the laptop or PDA you are using is compatible with the DigiTraveler™. You should be outside with a clear view of the sky (buildings, mountains and heavy foliage can block your satellite reception). The DigiTraveler's™ LED indicator should be lighted and green. Remember that acquiring satellites from a cold start can take up to 20 minutes. If it still does not work, try reinstalling the software and running it again.

DeLorme has informed us that there will be another upgrade patch for all DeLorme XMap® software around the second week of November 2002.

Question: We have noticed that, in the Circle area, the satellites on the left are green. Why?
Answer: This indicates that your DigiTraveler™ is tracking those satellites, that ephemeris data (position of the satellites) is available and that the satellites are being used for navigation.

Question: If the DigiTraveler™ loses the signal, "Acquiring" is displayed. When stopped and started again, the GPS software goes back to tracking. Is this a glitch?
Answer: No, this is the memory feature. The GPS software will always look first at the last known location and if the satellites are located quickly then the acquiring message would not have time to be seen.

Question: How can I find out information about the different satellites?
Answer: Information about the satellites can be found in the Almanac included in the program. The Almanac window will give a satellite number and current status.
